Welcome back!

In case you thought I had forgotten this, and Colonial was dead, let me assure you that that is not the case! Unfortunately the switch to Ubuntu 11.04, though smooth, was also pretty distracting + involving, and in the process I got caught up with a lot of things external to the game’s development, and of course life threw other things at me (work needed, etc) – so things stalled a bit.

However, the good news is, I’ll be back to blogging regularly, as well as pushing progress on the game itself :)!!!

One of the things I’ve decided to change is my method of development. Instead of trying to put together little pieces all over the place, which doesn’t work well in the long run, I will try to develop step by step, in an organized fashion that is easy for others to pick up on and follow. The first step I want to focus on is in prototyping/sketching/planning the ideas/parts of the game that are still outstanding. These include the UI, some unit designs, Music, etc. You will be hearing a lot from me in the coming weeks.

Slow, but not dead

As usual, updates here have been slow for a while.

That’s mostly because I’m doing other things, but also because behind the scenes I’ve been taking the time to refine the goals of the game and my ideas for implementation. Sometimes in the excitement of the original idea, you can lose the vision. For that reason I’ve decided to slow myself down quite a bit.

Buildings.

What kind of buildings/structures should a colony of living (non-mechanical) alien-ish creatures need? Most of what they produce will be hatched/born, so where can buildings fit in?

All about image!

One of the things I realize I need to give this game, is a face. Something that speaks of what the game is all about, and attracts people to it. I’ll be working on that soon (relatively) as well. That means, a logo, unit designs + "liveries" etc.

Back to coding shortly

I’m hoping to start coding again very soon (possibly this evening/night). I’ll be looking at another project – opentracks (sorry I forgot the link) for inspiration/etc. No, I’m not planning to copy code from George’s project even though it’s so awesome, just that he’s getting somewhere, so it would be good to learn from him, and possibly contribute sometimes :).

On another note, I’ve been looking at some other RTS games and thinking of ways to make this one awesome. One of the things I’m really considering a lot is making the graphics rock. I want to take RTS to the brink of awesome – and then tip it over.

Long time – no news (I know right?!)

In case you thought the game was dead – it’s not! I have been busy with other things, but I’m still interested, even if things are going very slowly 😦

I’ll get back to regular updates soon though, just trying to get some rl issues sorted :)!

On another note, I’ve been getting acquainted with the changes in Blender 2.5x – trust me, it’s big – so that’s why no model designs have been posted (yet), but I’m getting to the point where I might be able to do that soon as well ^^!

Again – I would really love if some more experienced programmers could get involved :). I’m skilled as a programmer but I won’t call myself an expert lol! So some help would be nice ^^

And we’re back

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

After a long vacation! I’m back! Time to get rolling again on development. Not a lot has changed – for one thing I’ve been too busy to code, but I have had time to work on design of the game a bit more. I’ll continue to post my progress as I go.

Codeblocks fixed, will update the project shortly.

I finally fixed a problem with Codeblocks that was stopping me from using the menu in it.

Now I can use Codeblocks again 🙂

KDE desktop :)

I’m currently using KDE for a while to help me get accustomed to using other environments and for a breath of fresh air :). I’m finding some things about it so far to be better than GNOME (definitely visually better in some areas), but I’m still in the GNOME/XFCE camp for now. Something about KDE’s glassy look seems… too glassy.

I should mention, this is KDE 4.6 beta and not just KDE. I’ve used KDE many times (for minutes, usually) in the past, and this will be the first time since KDE3 that I’m consistently using it for doing actual work etc.
